The Proud Rooster has been proudly cock-a-doodle-doing for many years now (since the 1950’s). They still enjoy a steady flow of regulars and those who love to eat breakfast later in the day, as breakfast is served all day here (open from 7:00 am-3:00 pm.). Their eggs are perfect – whether sunny-side up or fried or scrambled. The biscuits and gravy will melt in your mouth too and you will suddenly wonder if your grandma maybe could improve her own great cooking by taking a lesson from this place or learning the recipe! (Oh sorry, we can’t do that kids – proprietary and proper not to share such secrets!)
Sandwiched in between a bunch of other quaint and charming little indie shops such as retail outlets all lined up on Ludlow Avenue like a tie-dye shop, Habanero deli, a rare jewelry shop other fun and funky stores and businesses, The Proud Rooster lives up to its name to be amid the proudest of the mom and pops in such an eclectic town like Clifton.
The first thing you see when you walk into the small restaurant/diner is a food bar lined with cushy bar stools and a few quiet tables beyond the front area for more intimate, comfy sit-down meals. This place is quaint and cozy, giving that feeling of being back in the country at Grandma’s with that down-home, homemade cooking, but in a big city atmosphere.
While shopping at one of the specialty shops or seeing an independent movie at The Esquire Theater right down the street, there’s always room for a bite at The Proud Rooster. Here is one of those places like a ‘Cheers’ kind of stop – where everyone knows your name and you can sit and watch the chef cook up all of your favorites in the grill at the front barstool area.
The breakfast isn’t all that is impeccably good, however. There’s always the fried chicken, meatloaf meal or the pork tenderloin sandwich that is “to die for”, so say the locals who have reported this to their friends and family on a steady basis.
